Traditional Utilitarianism is a consequentialism moral theory. It proposes that an action can only be deemed as morally right or wrong based on the impact it creates on the society as a whole (Shaw, 2016). It is based on the belief that moral people should only pursue actions that produce the greatest good for the greatest number of people. As such, a utilitarian believes that the end justifies the mean.Determining the moral thing to do on any particular occasion involves four considerations. First, it is important to evaluate what courses of action are available. Second, it is important to determine all the benefits of all the available courses of action. The third consideration involves determining all the costs of the available courses of action and subtracting them from the benefits to identify the net satisfaction. The final consideration involves selecting the action that produces maximum net satisfaction for the greatest number of people(Desjardins & McCall, 2014).
