Community involvement is essential for students in their academic life as well as ensuring the stronger relationship with the community beyond the campuses. Besides, such service-learning prepares students for future endeavors through integration with the community. One of the activities that Latin American Youth Center offers is caring for the youths and their aspirations. Most teenagers are homeless due to stressful situations such as economic hardships, high standards of living, and lack of jobs and abandonment of children in streets. Therefore, finding shelters for such people would solve their problems such as achieving their goals, hunger, poverty, and crime among others. Latin American Youth Center offers service learning as well as a home for the hopeless youths hence engaging in such areas enhance personal attachment and understanding the circumstances that homeless people undergo. Henceforth, the present essay highlights an assessment and evaluation of Latin American Youth Center on the service learning it offers in the community.
The Latin American Youth Center (LAYC) began in 1968 as a non-profit entity in Washington DC to empower the Latino youth. Later on, the institution embraces a diverse population of youth to successfully achieve their transition to adult through innovation, comprehensiveness, and multiculturalism. Therefore, the enterprise addresses social, academic and career concerns for the teenagers and continues to transform the lives of the youths in poverty-stricken areas as well as their families (Burrell, 2017). Besides, the LAYC gives numerous services with bilingual enrichment, intervention programs as well as prevention programs and opportunities in education and housing. Besides, the organization enhances community building, mental health services, arts and healthy recreation to more than 4,000 youths every year. Also, the LAYC gives shelters homeless youth, youth in foster care and juvenile justice systems as well as those with problems of drug abuse (Burrell, 2017).
