Organizations should understand that job description is significant in training, performance evaluation, and orientation. That is the reason why workers’ responsibilities and duties should align with a particular job position. If employees are hired and then their job descriptions change without appropriate training, some of them can be affected adversely, resulting in worker-management disagreements. That is the situation that occurred to Brenda Batten, who was an exceptional senior technical representative (STR) of Blackhawk Aironics before the firm adopted a new work reorganization plan. By using the five primary elements of the Job Characteristics Model (JCM), the paper elaborates on how each component was affected by the change in Blackhawk Aironics.
The five core elements of the JCM are feedback, task or job identity, skill variety, the significance of a task, and autonomy (Martin, 2017). Skill variety is the requirements of a particular job to carry out various activities. Before the reorganization plan was implemented in Blackhawk Aironics, Brenda played her roles well, and she was an outstanding employee. In reality, one manager called her an expert of complex technology in the satellite or space weather system. However, after the implementation of a new work plan, Brenda’s responsibilities did not align with her job position. For example, she was required to telecommute with engineers, managers, and customers throughout North America. In other terms, Brenda’s expertise had no place in her new job. When it comes to task identity, Brenda was unable to meet all the duties in her new job entirely. Instead, she only fulfilled bits of responsibilities, which made her uncomfortable with her new roles. After the work reorganization plan, Brenda did not find meaning in her job since her outcomes were invisible. In particular, that might be the reason she told Martin Eaton, her manager, that he did not know what she does anymore.
