According to the play, Willy is a traveler salesperson of a particular product for a New York company. The author does not disclose the specific product Willy sells, in my opinion, because the career of a salesperson is one that people identify with mainly because at one point or the other, one has to sell himself or herself thus attracts a wide array of audience. What the type of sale Willy conducts is more of a customer-centered approach. All through the play, he describes the various business trips he has taken throughout his career to deliver products to customers and make sales. Willy describes his job at a young age as a successful one, as he worked hard by presenting a tailor-made sales pitch to the needs of the customer and utilizing their language, making them like him and thus, buy from him. Therefore, this type of sales explains why he tells his wife the customers do not like him, or when talking to his neighbor Charley, he says to him, “I will go to Hartford; I am very well-liked in Hartford!”
The story took place in the 1940s Brooklyn in William Lowman’s house and backyard in New York City. In the setting, the house stood in a beautiful surrounding where the sun shone enabling Willy to plant some seedlings.
