All my sons is a 1947 play by Arthur Miller which was first acted at the Coronet Theatre in New York City on January 29, 1947 and closed on November 1949 after 328 performances. The play was directed by Elia Kazan and it won the New York Drama Critics Circle Award. All my sons is based on a true story that took place in the times of the world war II when Wright Aeronautical Corporation conspired with inspection army officers to approve defective aircraft engines for military use which later led to a fatal accident of over 21 army pilots. Among other several characters in the play, Arthur has developed Joe Keller as an uneducated, hardworking business man and a family man who can do anything to protect the interests of his family and business.
Arthur builds Joe Keller as an uneducated man and describes him as a huge and heavy man who:
When he reads, when he speaks, when he listens, it is with the terrible concentration of the uneducated man for whom there is still wonder in many commonly known things, a man whose judgments must be dredged out of experience and a peasant-like common sense (1.1).
Arthur develops him as an uneducated but a successful businessman who owns a factory. His wife Kate also emphasizes the fact that her husband is not learned and greatly blames this fact for a majority of his actions which made them lose their son. After George makes the ominous phone call, Kate warns her husband to “be smart now, Joe. The boy is coming. Be smart" (1.620). Arthur presents him in this nature to justify how desperate Joe was in assigning defective aircrafts to the army. He was very determined to earn a living and did not consider the repercussions...
