The Challenges That will Plague Innovators in the Flexible Workforce

The flexible workforce is increasingly becoming part of modern organizations primarily because of the advancement of technology and specifically the internet. According to Weathington and Weathington (2020), workforce flexibility is also common because of the increasing need by employees to have control over their work. As can be seen from videos ‘Lyft, Uber and Sidecar’ and ‘EatWith,’ both by the Reason Foundation (2014), technology has allowed people to turn their cars and homes into profitable businesses. In both videos, the major challenges presented are government bureaucracy and regulations. I predict that these challenges will continue to hamper plague innovators in the flexible workforce.
As narrated in the ‘Lyft, Uber and Sidecar’ video, as a result of bureaucracy, drivers like Chelsea have to apply for special operating licenses and they face hurdles in their operations because the authorities seek to protect existing taxi cartels (The Reason Foundation, 2014). Therefore, innovators in the flexible workforce are bound to continue facing bureaucracy problem which is partly supported by existing businesses that fear competition. It is without a doubt that innovations such as Uber and Lyft revolutionized the taxi business and the traditional mode of operation was somehow destroyed. As can be deduced from the video, the bureaucracy exists to protect traditional taxi businesses. Innovators in the flexible workforce will thus continue facing the same problems into the future.
