Today’s globally competitive business environment has caused many U.S. businesses to reduce the value of their employee benefit packages. Examine how an organization can maintain its costly benefit structure while remaining competitive against countries whose companies do not offer such benefits.

As the world becomes more globalized, businesses in the US reduce the value of their employee benefits packages as jobs are outsourced to other countries. According to EPI (2013), in 2011, international trade caused a 5.5% decline in wages of non-college-educated workers in the US It can be quite challenging for a company based in the US to maintain a costly pay structure and at the same time compete effectively with other companies with an inexpensive pay structure. One way to maintain the costly pay structure and remain competitive is to tie compensation with performance. In the course text, Weathington and Weathington (2020) note that from a global standpoint, the CEOs of US-based companies are overpaid; however, when you consider the fact that the compensation is tied to corporate performance, the high pay is justifiable. In this sense, US-based companies can ensure that their compensation packages reflect the performance of the employees. In this case, I think the costly pay structure will be associated with better performance.
