They were used as recording devices that consisted of various colors, spuns and plied thread-like structures made of hair and cotton cords. This artifact aided in keeping records and collection of data, including census activities. Types of wool, color, and knots represented different statistical narratives. American society was skilled, and they could retrieve information recorded in the quipu of Caral (Ancient origin 2014). Some villages in South America used quipu of Caral to perform ritual practices rather than keeping records. Discovery of this artifact proved that inhabitants of Andean South America were using quipu to record complex data for a long time.
