  • Pro Argument: Children will eventually become consumers, and are effective at moving their parents towards products, whether they are aimed at children (toys) or are just general products (soft drinks, food, etc.)

  • Pro Counterargument: Children are not old enough to understand what is best for them, and parents rarely make important decisions based on children's outlooks.

  • Con Argument: Because of their age, they can be easily manipulated, children should not be directly advertised to.

  • Con Counterargument: Rules and regulations are in place to ensure that advertisements towards children are ethical.

Pro Argument
Children are bound to become consumers as they grow up and advertising plays an integral role in helping them develop important consumer socialization skills. Consumer socialization in this case is the process through which children gradually learn the norms, rules, and habits associated with purchase practice (Šramová, 2017). During the process, children acquire knowledge, skills, and attitudes that help them function well as consumers in the marketplace. As the children learn how to purchase items due to the influence of advertising, they develop the competence of how to deal with the economic world (Šramová, 2017). They learn how to work with money and consequently understand the value of money. In this sense, advertising helps children gain important behaviors, knowledge, attitudes, and opinions that are integral in the world of economy.
Pro Counterargument
While advertising to children can help them gain valuable knowledge about the marketplace, it is important to recognize that they are not old enough to understand what is best for them and their parents rarely make decisions based on children’s viewpoints. Children are characterized by inexperience and the inability to critically reflect on the information received through advertising (International Chamber of Commerce, n.d.).
