Hydrazine is an industrial chemical that poses a severe health danger. Hydrazine is a highly flammable, poisonous, and carcinogenic liquid with an ammonia-like stench that acute skin exposure can result in irritation, corrosion, and burns. Respiratory symptoms include irritability, shortness of breath, pneumonitis, and the possibility of pulmonary edema. If an individual ingests hydrazine, they can suffer nausea, vomiting, and even intestinal hemorrhage. While in emergency services, it is often an afterthought. Various authorities have given exposure values, some of which can be highly misleading. Exposure levels for common substances and scenarios have been determined. Preventing exposures requires constant monitoring for hazardous products and wearing proper PPE (Bevelacqua & Norman, 2019). The principal authority responsible for exposure values is OSHA. All industries, such as the fire service, must adhere to OSHA's exposure limits.
There is still the possibility of hydrazine exposure if equipment malfunctions or the systems accidentally activate themselves. Sometimes human error might occur. This paper focuses on analyzing the hydrazine's emergency response capabilities and containment at a fixed facility where workers may be exposed to hydrazine.
Emergency Planning and Hazard Assessment
Emergency response plans for first responders (fire departments and EMS) at USAF installations are always available in case of an incident in the facility. These plans can be implemented in the event of an exposure (Brough, 2016). MDGIs (Medical Group Instructions) are developed by each medical facility and followed by their medical responders. No human research has been conducted because of hydrazine's severe toxicity. The less gathered information has restricted the available toxicological information. As a result of the scarcity of information, developing an effective emergency medical management strategy is difficult. OSHA and NIOSH hydrazine guidelines are recommended, and US Air Force hydrazine reaction MDGIs from sites worldwide. Given current published standards and an assessment of emergency service protocols from facilities that have experienced hydrazine exposures. The best practices methods for responding to hydrazine emergencies based on the data have been developed. In addition, a guideline flowsheet was developed to help first responders obtain a best practice reaction. All parties engaged in a possible hydrazine exposure should benefit from these recommendations in enhancing their specific site's emergency medical procedure and containment measures.
