Quiz for theater history
Passage Identification and Explication. Identify the passage by naming the play, the playwright, the century of composition, and the character(s) speaking. Then write a few sentences discussing the passage’s significance. DO NOT summarize the plot. You might discuss key terms, theatrical conventions, imagery, dramatic structure, broader aesthetic/cultural values, or how the passage functions within the world of the play. Use quotes from the passage as evidence.
Key Term Identification. Write two to three short sentences defining the term and explaining its significance. If you were to choose “Allegory of the Cave,” for example, you would want to say: “A passage written by Plato in which a prisoner chained to a wall, confusing shadows on a wall for reality, escapes and sees the real world, but none of the prisoners will believe him.” But, for full credit, you want to follow that up by saying: “This is significant for theater history because it raises questions about whether the imitation of theater leads people away from the truth, similar to shadows on the prisoners’ wall, or whether it can reveal the truth.”
