Assignment: Monument Proposal
In this assignment your objective is to write a proposal for a monument or statue remembering the enslaved Africans of the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade. Compose this as if writing a proposal to Congress explaining why there should be such a monument, and what it should emphasize about the slave trade (as found in slavevoyages.org).
Drawing only on the evidence from the Trans-Atlantic Slave Database make an argument about why there should be such a monument. Try to explain what you can learn from the slave database that should be remembered and memorialized.
Use the website effectively, discussing the numbers and trajectory (changes over time) in the nature of the slave trade, note the geographic expanse of the trade in enslaved Africans, and anything on demography (death rates, gender, etc).
Go to the Trans-Atlantic drop down menu and look under the database and try to find different types of evidence. But you can also discuss what the database does not tell us.

Also propose the type of monument you would like to see (statue of an individual or group, a small or large structure).
• Should the monument be abstract or figurative (showing a human figure or figures)? Why/why not?
• What material should be used? Explain why?
• How large should it be?
• If possible suggest a location
• What text will be provided on a label for the monument?
This discussion should give a good sense of what you think is most important about what we can learn about the slave trade from the database itself (not from any other source for this assignment). So explain key traits of the trade by drawing upon the database.
Try to be imaginative about the monument itself. You could include a drawing or sketch, and upload it or send it to me.
Overall this should around 500 words.
You can look at one example at the United Nations.

Monument Proposal
There is need to design and set up a memorial honoring the Africans that were subjected to slavery in the course of the trans-Atlantic slave trade. The buildings, monuments, and statues that people in the United States sometimes pass by each day without a second glance depict a collective history and culture capable of empowering Americans and bringing them together. Such structures in a way look forward to the future. They can be considered as places of healing as they are collective histories of all Americans irrespective of race or ethnic backgrounds. Erecting a memorial presents an opportunity for them to acknowledge that they are all connected in that central way.
The trans-Atlantic slave trade was a maritime form of commerce involving captured Africans that went on between the mid-16th century and the 1860s. European traders would parade African captives at various points on the coast of Africa, after which they would be loaded onto slave ships and transported to Europe and the Americas. For almost four centuries, about 12.5 million Africans were packed into the ships. Roughly 11 million would survive the horrendous journey to land in the Americans and embark on a life of slavery. A memorial would be the ideal structure to commemorate centuries of injustice and gross human rights violations directed at Africans.
The memorial will be in the form of a slave ship sculpture. The work of art will mirror a ship sailing on an ocean, with its mosaic depicting the infamous...
