In the MoMA art museum, Van Gogh says that he is most passionate about his artwork. He loved modern portraits, which he described as colorful with a vivid palette, spirited handling, and animated background. The unconventional use of color was vital for him as he created what he illustrates as “portraits which would look like apparitions to people of the century, later.” He believed that his portraits would last longer if he left a photographic resemblance and a passionate expression for the viewers.
When he decided to become an artist, his first portraits centered on the human figure, he started by drawing and painting the workers in the village of Nuenen, where he was born. The paintings mainly conveyed the invisible hardships of life in the village. He wanted to display the manual labor and discipline and honesty shown by the people to earn their daily food (Thomson, 2008).  After finishing this manual labor project, he moved to Antwerp, seeking to advance his art skills. He adopted the abandoned pallets and broken brushwork of the impressionists and Neo-Impressionists, whose work he encountered in studios and galleries.
In February 1888, Van Gogh moved to Arles in Southern France with hopes of establishing a community of artists. In October, Paul Gauguin joined him; they shared interests in a lot more, and their time together was marked by heated debates about the origins and aims of art. While Paul was motivated to work on dreams, memories, and imagination, Van's real-world and tangible things impressed. He loved working on landscape and terrestrial; generally, he loved nature. Van, one time, said that the night often seems more colored than the day; some stars are lemony, others pink and green on blue sky. Discussing his art was surprisingly an outstanding achievement to him.
