Although social justice art is not a topic exclusive to the 20th and 21st centuries, the distribution of information regarding controversial art with gender, race, sexual, and/or environmental themes has increased with the proliferation of media. Choose an example of a social justice work of art from the 20th or 21st centuries from any discipline of the humanities (music, literature, sculpture, film, television, etc.). Then, address the following:
Identify the work and the medium.
Based on your example, to what extent does this work of art make a social contribution?
What aesthetic value does the work have? How does it reflect the human condition? How does it relate to your life?
Has this work ever been censored? If so, explain the circumstances.
Are governments ever justified in censoring art? Why or why not?
Examine some of the influences of this work of art. What was the public reaction to this work? Does it effectively portray its message?
Argue whether or not this work should be considered art. Explain why using terms learned in this course.
Include an accompanying statement from the artist(s) and a statement from a critic to support your points.

Introduction
Art has a significant power to instigate social change in communities worldwide. By deploying as an innovative medium for creating awareness, artists assume an advocacy role, challenging social justice issues. Subsequently, public art reaches people in their usual environment and confronts them to act on social injustices that are otherwise overlooked. For instance, Jasyoth Singh Hans uses art to create awareness on social injustice issues.
Artwork and the Medium
Born in New Delhi, India, Hans utilizes social media as a platform to advocate for issues, suh as bullying and body positivity. In particular, his Instagram channel encourages people to break away from stereotypes using drawings that illustrate women not succumbing to the societal conceptions of femininity. The specific drawing that Hans uses to promote social justice for women is Bangs, 2019 (See Fig. 1).

`Despite being a contemporary art, Hans’s drawing holds the originality of the time bygone. The drawing was inspired by issues that he felt mattered most and the support and guidance acquired from friends. Being a plus-sized man, he was bullied at a young age. The pain he experience inspired him to speak about body positivity through his drawings. In support for social justice for plus-sized women, Hans said, “For far too long women have been told to act and behave, and allowed lesser and lesser agency over their own bodies and navigating their emotions.
