Walmart on Gender Discrimination
Walmart was in a conflict with some of its female employees who claimed that they were discriminated against by being paid less and denied promotions. One hundred and seventy-eight women filed a complaint against the organization with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) (Wiessner, 2019). EEOC asked Walmart and the women (complainants) to negotiate and come up with a fair agreement, which could include changes to the employment practices at Walmart and an amicable settlement. Walmart stated they were ready to negotiate with the women and reach an agreement. The issue escalated to the United States (U.S.) supreme court, where the negotiation would be carried out in the shadow of the law (Wiessner, 2019). A judgment was made favoring Walmart since the women could not fully prove that they were discriminated against while at Walmart (Carsen, 2019).
Choosing a Side
When it comes to choosing sides, I support the women who complained about being discriminated against at Walmart. Walmart has had serious gender discrimination allegations in the past fifteen years. In 2001, a file suit against Walmart was filed by six women, claiming that the organization had discriminated against 1.6 million female workers based on their gender (Wiessner, 2019). Such complaints against Walmart were felt throughout the country in over thirty states. Considering this trend, gender discrimination at Walmart has been organization-wide, and it does not just stem from a few individuals (Carsen, 2019). Therefore, Walmart is more likely guilty of gender discrimination, just that the plaintiffs could not present solid proof. In the recent court hearing, the court admitted that something was ‘rotten’ in Walmart’s corporate culture.
Human Behavioral Factors
The women watched their male colleagues receive more compensation than them simply because of being women. Despite their qualifications and work experience, they stayed in the same positions for years, and their applications for promotion had been turned down. One human behavioral factor that came into play was institutional structures that defined the rules and regulations existing within the organization. Walmart had for so long abandoned and neglected women's pleas to enjoy similar compensation rates with their male counterparts (Wiessner, 2019). Public policy factors also came into play, where the law influenced the court’s ruling and failed to find tangible evidence that would incriminate Walmart. As a result, gender discrimination in Walmart has continued for years.
