Statesmanship is being a leader who is able to advocate for peoples’ rights in a way that is humane and gives respect to life. Having strong moral principles and firm virtues is what defines a really statesman. Ability to be focused and remain optimistic throughout the cause of an activity is true statesmanship. The key attributes of true statesmanship during national disunity are as follows:
A statesman should lead by moral authority and act in absolute truth. He should stand firm on the belief of human freedom whether for a servant or master. Dred Scott fought for his freedom and for people of African ancestry. "In Dred Scott," Graber argues, "the Supreme Court fostered sectional moderation by replacing the original Constitution’s failing political protections for slavery with legally enforceable protections acceptable to Jacksonians in the free and slave states." (Dyer pg. 170). Therefore a statesman should be able to allow people to be independent and not enslave others due to a national crisis. Dred Scott displays this attribute by believing that slavery should not be tolerated and those who enslave others owe those enslaved an apology.
Being diligent, kind and hardworking is another key attribute of a statesman as Thatcher puts it "…It does not matter what your background is, where you come from. If you want to use your own talents, be responsible for your own families, work jolly hard and be prepared to help your neighbour, we are the party for you". (Evans pg. 111). Thatcher’s belief in hard work, diligence and kindness as a statesman cannot be underrated. During national disunity a statesman should work diligently to ensure that the crisis is resolved and be kind in deeds and words.
Third, a statesman should have a clear vision and be optimistic. A national disunity situation brings a lot of anxiety more so to the leaders and the general public. Jefferson as an example believed in bridging people beyond the congress. "Jefferson thus signaled his belief that political harmony was possible because Americans shared the same governing principles."(Newell pg. 34). In situations of national...
