Important Political Philosophy-Related Ideas
Plato a philosopher who lived between 427-347 B.C.E, made a mark as one of the greatest philosophers of his time. He set himself apart with ideas that redefined political philosophy at the time and ones that have outlived him to date. According to Plato, different views and conflicting factions in the society can be harmonized. The human mind, he believed, had the ability to discern the truth and use it as a virtual to order human affairs, while borrowing from cognitive optimism and insights from nature’s reality. He believed a political order that is rational and righteous, allowing all parts of the society to flourish without impeding others.
According to Judges 21:25 – “In those days there was no king in Israel: every man did right in his own eyes.” Exodus 19:5 also indicates that- “Now therefore, if ye will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenant, then ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all people: for all the earth is mine.” The book of Romans 13:1-7 on the other hand states “Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that are ordained of God.”
Aristotle who was a student to Plato also followed in his teacher’s footsteps and became one the greatest philosophers of his time. According to Aristotle, the politicians are like the craftsmen. His philosophical analogy was based on the fact that the politicians craft the legislative aspect of the constitution that governs the entire nation and beyond. In his philosophical idea, this is the same case to craftsmen with skills such as medicine men. Strauss and Cropsey add onto to this idea saying that, “One cannot understand the nature of man if one does not understand the nature of human society” (Strauss &Cropsey, 1987, 5)
Cicero like the forerunners believed that ethics was inseparable from politics. Plato and Aristotle had made this clear in theory political philosophies. In De Officiis, he indicates that justice cannot be met without the conflict with personal interests.
