The rule of law is an important aspect in human society as it prevents man from imposing personal rules for their own private interests. This rule of law is defined and protected by the government. Thus, the most important role of the government is to secure the rights and freedoms of citizens.
Proper role of the government
In Gen 1:265, the bible says that all men were created equal. The government is an authority and like every other authority is instituted by God. The proper role of the government according to the bible is to give protection to its citizens’ rights and make laws for the good and safety of societies. Rights are not gifts from one man to another neither are they from one social class to another.2 Ex: 18-24, explains that everyone under the government is supposed obey the rule of the law. The government on the other hand should be impartial in administering the rules for the safety of the citizens.
The government is placed over and above all the citizens and they are obliged to obey and follow the laws. According to Romans 13:1, Paul says that, everyone is subject to the governing authority. The only authority is the one that comes from God and the governing bodies instituted by God. In Romans13:2, Paul also states that those that do not follow and obey the rule of law as implemented by the government are liable to be punished. In this verse the government is seen as the implementer of God’s will, where it acts as the sword and wrath of punishment, from God.
What are responsibilities of the government?
One of the most basic responsibilities of the government is offering the people security and protection at all costs. Ideally, other than just protecting the citizens from the outside atrocities that be perpetrated by foreigners, it also protects them from each other and themselves. It is also the responsibility of the government to provide the citizens with the right quality of social services. This means that the government is responsible for the provision of amenities such as, hospitals, roads, airports, housing and even firefighting services.Additionally; it is the responsibility of the government to control the economy of the country. Ideally, it offers services such as job creation, fairness and ensuring proper competition among others.
