Servant Leadership and the Commonalities in How Leaders Influence and Motivate Followers

Coursework Instructions:

Provide a 150 word minimum response to each of the 2 postings of the classmates in regards to questions A and B.

Please note you can agree or disagree in your response with any of the responses from the classmates as long as you back it up with explanation and facts. You must use at least 1 source from class readings for each response at minimum and 1 other source from class or outside of class.

In-text citations must be done in accordance with Global College Style Guide attached and not APA. (Questions A and B responses below have done citations appropriately).

  • QUESTION A: Robert Greenleaf’s notion of servant leadership is based on “a leader’s duty to serve his/her followers.” In what ways is servant leadership difficult to achieve in the military, especially when you as a leader may need to choose what is required for your mission over what is desirable for those you are leading.  In what areas do you think it is most important to practice servant leadership?
  • QUESTION B: There are common themes that are shared among the contrasts being made in Dr. Klann’s concepts of compliance versus commitment, James M. Burns' transactional versus transformational leadership, and Robert Greenleaf’s Servant Leader versus McGregor’s Theory X managers. What are those commonalities and how do they apply to leader influence and follower motivation?

Justify and support your answer using your experience and source support from the assigned readings.

Response to Tony’s Post
I agree with Tony that leadership in the military can be challenging because good leaders are expected to prioritize the mission and take care of their followers. Military leaders hold crucial responsibilities. As Tony argues, these individuals have to balance between the mission and people. In that light, awareness, and stewardship are the primary characteristics of servant leadership that military leaders should apply. In particular, awareness enables leaders to know things involving values, power, and ethics. Stewardship entails being committed to serving others’ needs (Spears 2010, 3). I concur with Tony that military leaders have to take care of their subordinates so that they can complete the mission successfully. They should use power to influence their followers so that they can create a command climate to ensure that the directions they give are followed to overcome the challenges they might come across in their missions (Klann 2010, 9). Moreover, military leaders should be approachable and genuine so that they can succeed in supporting their followers during the mission.
