The reason I chose Cuban was because I have always been fascinated with Spanish people, and the person I chose to interview was my brother-in-law, he is Cuban. I thought he would be interesting to interview because when he was 10 years old, his father and the rest of his family fled Cuba on the El Mariel boat lift in the 80s to escape Castro's government. They came to the shores of Miami, fl. and started their life as American immigrants.'

This population must be substantially different from your own background and culture, and it should have a history of oppression and/or discrimination. Seek out a member of that population group to interview. Ask about the following: their experiences with oppression; their perspectives on power; their access to resources; and the adaptive ways they have used to circumvention oppression.  In your paper, first, discuss why you have an interest in the population your client represents and the reason why you picked this group. Then discuss your understanding of social work values regarding diversity and explore how these values are relevant to this population. I chose to study Cuban Latinos to comprehend diverse populations and the effects of oppression and discrimination. My long-standing fascination with Spanish-speaking cultures and my connection to this group through my brother-in-law inspired this decision. His family's history, which includes their departure from Cuba during the 1980s El Mariel boatlift, offers a unique perspective on the Cuban Latino experience. In this paper, I will discuss my interview with my brother-in-law, investigating his experiences with oppression, perspectives on power, access to resources, and the adaptive strategies he and his family used to navigate the obstacles they encountered as immigrants in the United States.
Understanding Social Work Values Regarding Diversity
Diversity, cultural competency, and social justice underpin ethical practice in social work. These beliefs emphasize social workers' moral obligation to support excluded and underprivileged communities actively (Smith et al., 2014). Fairness, equity, and inclusivity in social services are vital to them. Diversity, one of these essential values, celebrates the wide range of human experiences, identities, and ethnicities (Smith et al., 2014). Cultural competency, along with diversity, is essential in social work. Cultural competence for Cuban Latinos involves appreciating their unique culture and understanding their migration history, such as the El Mariel boat lift, and overcoming the challenges they face as newcomers in a foreign land. Social work's fight against inequality, discrimination, and oppression is driven by social justice, the third pillar of these ideals. Cuban Latinos and other immigrant communities facing discrimination and persecution should prioritize social justice (Grosser, 2020). Social workers must fight systemic impediments to these groups' fair access to resources, services, and opportunities.
Cuban Latinos demonstrate the continued significance of these ideals in social work. These concepts allow social workers to meet Cuban Latinos' unique needs and challenges with culturally sensitive and effective services (Grosser, 2020). They can also fight structural injustices that have harmed this community and oppressed groups worldwide.

In this interview, I had the honor of chatting with my brother-in-law, whom I will call "Carlos," to preserve his anonymity. Carlos, 45, a Cuban Latino, has unique cultural origins and experiences. He lives in Miami, Florida, known for its Cuban-American community. Carlos' tale typifies American immigration.
