Coursework Instructions:

The student will write a 10-12 page, 12 font, double-spaced paper complete with footnote references that analyzes, interprets, and applies a passage from Matthew, Mark, John, or the Synoptic Gospels (not Luke alone) that is relevant to your précis topic. The students should supplement their papers by reading through some more articles and/or books related to their subject. Please include footnote references; points will be deducted if you do not do so.

Bibliography should include 10 sources regardless of whether or not you consulted/read them al|. Apart from articles, the students should use commentaries, a Bible Dictionary, a Concordance/Lexicon, provided that they first do their own exegesis. The student will also provide an outline of the passage you exegete with discussion of observations you discovered based on a careful reading of the passage. The paper should be at least TO pages altogether with title page and bibliography; hence, at very least 8 fully written pag'es of content apart from title page (1 page) and bibliography (1 page). Title pages should have Title centered and with student‘s name, professor's name, course, date, and assignment. Please include headings on subsequent pages with student's last name and page numbers. Please

do not quote sources excessively. Please (ollow correct procedures (rom the syllabus. Also (ollow correct footnoting and bibliography procedures written in this syll‹]bus,- both ore required (or this paper. Further instructions wil/ be giyen when the assignment is active.

Step #1: The student will do his/her own exegetical work on a passage related to a text we are studying in this class, and relevant to your précis topic. If you are not sure, see the professor for ideas. The student wiJl select the relevant passage and use the exegetical method to study it. You must show some evidence at the beginning of your paper that you have done your own exegetical work on the passage before consulting other sources. This is Analysis (“What does it say?" e.g., bring out keys words in the passage, conjunctions, relationship of clauses, etc.). An outline of the passage with some discussion of observations should be included in the first few pages of the paper (but please do not use more than 1 to 1 / pages to give an outline of the passage. Single-space the outline). Again, I will post up a Term Paper Guideline for refresher on how to do it. 

Step #2: After exegesis, the student will then answer or raise questions based on his/her findings (What does it mean?). The student will attempt to discover information related to either the socio-cultural setting, the historico-situational setting, or comparative analysis, and answers to question from his/her exegesis in step #1 (What did it mean in its original setting?). The student should consult articles, commentaries, textbooks, lexicon, biblical dictionaries, and other resources for assistance with this section. PJease make sure to consult other sources; if few or no sources are cited, points will be deducted. This section, along with your exegesis, should take up a large segment of the length of your paper. 1. Introduction
During his ministering, Jesus did things that many of his detractors felt went against the norms. For instance, he performed miracles during the Sabbath, which the Pharisees and Sadducees condemned in the strongest terms possible. They accused him of blatantly violating the law. In addition, Jesus mingled freely with people that were regarded by society with a negative attitude or as outcasts. A typical example of such a scenario was when he dined with Zacchaeus, who was a tax collector. The larger community regarded him as a sinner and an outcast and could not, therefore, understand Jesus’ decision to dine with him. The other typical example, which also generated considerable controversy, involved a Samaritan woman at the well of Jacob. The story revolves around the thorny issue of ethnic animosity, which, if well handled, yields love and salvation.
