Ferrin's process of inductive bible study is divided into three phases. To understand how to implement this entire process, one must understand each phase. Therefore, I will list each phase and then walk you through how these phases are significant for collective bible study. The first phase of the process is entirely about building the foundation for what you are about to read. We take a passage from the Bible and then individually look at each part of it to understand the meaning of the whole passage taken from the Bible. This foundation phase is practical as one can understand why a book has been written and the author's thoughts behind it. Once you understand the purpose of the book, you can easily understand why the author was keen on building a relationship using this purpose with the audience (Ferrin, 2003). The foundation and framing phases collectively take up 30 days of the process. There are three further steps in the foundation phase: foundational reading, background studies, and purpose statement.
In the framing phase, the reader prepares a foundational outline which includes primary ideas and the author's thought process (Ferrin, 2003). It is a more general part. The framing outline is the phase that enables the reader to further divide the book into sections in a more detailed manner. To do these two things properly, a reader must review the book ten times and then understand the natural breaks to make a rough draft. Then they again read the book for five days and then go back to the foundational outline. Finally, they finalize the work after proofreading.
The final phase is the Finish Work phase. In this phase, you will focus on the points that still need to be addressed or something that needs to be clearly explained (Ferrin, 2003). It is a fruitful phase that allows for reflection.
There are four unique steps in the second phase of Ferrin's approach. Before using them for more incredible benefits, one must look at the pros and cons. To start with the strengths, Ferrin mentions reading whichever book you are working on at least ten times (Ferrin, 2003). This is a great way to understand the Bible and its words properly.
