Personal Climate Change Adaptation Plan
Climate Change Adaptation Plan for My Family and Me
Introduction
As a professional, family man, and Moore County resident, I understand my unique role as an environmental custodian. My routine activities significantly influence the climate over the long run. As a result, awareness is fundamental to determining aspects one can adjust or improve to trigger a positive impact. Unlike many families that may be relatively large, I live with my wife. Since we work outside our single house and in different locations, we own two cars to facilitate our mobility. Moore County experiences unique environmental hazards similar to other North Carolina regions. Such aspects demonstrate the importance of developing an adaptation plan because it would assist individuals and families in reducing their vulnerability, improving their well-being, and strengthening their resilience (Palutikof et al., 2019). This plan would also enable people to anticipate climatic changes and refine their response. Such aspects will achieve safety, health, social equity, and food and water security.
Threat Forecast
Climate change is a reality within my neighborhood because it has triggered ongoing changes in traditional activities in the region. U.S. Global Change Research Program (2018) demonstrates that the Southeast region faces threats, including flooding, increasing heat, and the looming risk of vector-borne diseases. Recently, my community has struggled with the increasing heat and extreme downpours leading to localized flooding. These heats lead to other life-disrupting consequences due to failures in electrical system distribution. They also lead to loss of work hours, negatively affecting the economic activities in the region and interfering with agricultural activities. Flooding also limits mobility because they make it difficult for families to access shopping centers as needed, interfering with their daily living. Thus, climate change has induced a direct impact on our lives.
Mitigation
My family and community have increased awareness about climate change. They understand that every individual must play a fundamental role in tempering the current situation and inducing improvements in the future (U.S. Global Change Research Program, 2018). As a result, most families are embracing renewable energy sources to reduce greenhouse emissions and the threat of increasing temperatures or heat in the atmosphere. For instance, my family has installed solar for lighting our home. We have also shifted to electric and hybrid cars to limit our use of fossil fuels. Sometimes, people opt to use public buses for transport while executing their routine activities or to go to work to minimize their emissions into the environment. Such changes should occur immediately. These efforts have been fundamental in mitigating extreme downpours, heat, and flooding.
Adaptation
My family has realized that some climatic changes are beyond mitigation despite the efforts to avoid aggravating them. As a result, it has devised adaptation mechanisms to survive the threa...
