Question 1: Citizen police academies can often serve as a community policing tool to build relationships between the community and the police department.
• What are the most important topics that should be presented in a citizens' academy?
The most important topics that ought to be presented in a citizens’ academy are a police department’s procedures in relation to crime scene investigation, patrol operations, and drug enforcement; the limitations of police power; and the relevant laws that police follow as they carry out their law enforcement duties.
• How could a better understanding of those topics help strengthen the relationship?
A better understanding of the abovementioned topics can help strengthen the relationship between the police and community because they would clear the misconceptions about law enforcement procedures. As noted by Hall (2016), the fear, hostility, and suspicion directed at law enforcement are often due to a lack of knowledge about police procedures. An understanding of the topics by members of the community would help reduce these emotions, leading to a better relationship with the police department.
