The murder of George Floyd is one incident that has exposed the ills of the police department in recent times due to its brutality and racial discrimination. The reprehensive misconduct occurred during the arrest of a 46-year-old African American profiled as a suspect after being reported by a convenient store to the police that he had made a purchase store with a twenty-dollar counterfeit bill. The infamous transgression occurred when the police arrived at the store. As portrayed by an armature video captured by a by-standing teenage girl, an officer, Derek Chauvin, grounded Floyd’s neck with his knee. The officer excruciatingly placed the suspect in the position for over nine minutes despite the complaints of breathlessness by the victim. The exercise directly caused the death of Mr. Floyd. Derek Chauvin murdered a suspect in police custody.
The incident immediately elicited a public uproar after the footage by the girl received significant traction across the social media platforms. In the courts of public opinion, the officer was charged with racism (Singh, 2020). Given such an incident has not been registered in the arrest of a white person or at least in recent memory, the incident was immediately interpreted as an expression of racial discrimination. From the footage, Floyd is seemingly subdued and not presenting any threat that could warrant such levels of force. This barbaric treatment led to the rise of the hashtag “#BlackLivesMatter” because it was illustrative of ongoing racial discrimination in the nation (Singh, 2020). Due to the globality of the social media platforms, the castigations were as intense abroad.
