Life Experiences and Positive Change
My experience with an incident against a marginalized community was during the height of the "Black Lives Matter" movement. I participated in protests and campaigns against police brutality targeting black folks and neighborhoods. I shaped social media conversation on the subject matter. Even though my contribution was not substantial enough, the collective effort helped change society. Discrimination and the targeting of African American youths by police have declined, and everyone feels safe in our communities. Racism could only end when we highlight these differences and fight intolerance. Whites should learn to listen to the marginalized and support their push for fair treatment.
Personal Participation
The pain that African Americans are facing today is too familiar. Every time police brutality is reported, I am left wondering what I can do to help address the issue meaningfully. I wish to be an ally for the marginalized communities in society in the future and help end their oppression. The mainstream marginalization and discrimination of minorities have set a precedent for state-sanctioned discrimination. The best way to help the marginalized and end isolation and exclusion is by being a powerful ally. Allyship means being aware of my group's privileges to comprehend the marginalized communities' perspectives better.
I plan to achieve this by paying more attention to the opinions of the members of the marginalized communities.
Today, many people understand how to avoid stereotypes and generalizations. Similarly, many are still guilty of offensive language even though not intentional. I will educate people that crazy, gay, and lame words are profane, derogatory, and exclusionary. Moreover, I will demonstrate a willingness to accept correction. Considering that even the well-meaning people err and have misinformed perspectives about others, I will offer a sincere apology when someone pinpoints my error and show a willingness to learn from those experiences.
I plan to be highly narrow-minded of intolerance and more eager to face hateful and derogatory rhetoric in-person and speech online. I believe silence means supporting prejudice and discrimination. I will achieve this by seeking out the perspectives and voices of the marginalized. I will look for bloggers, activists, artists, and authors to contribute to the issue.
