In this exercise, you will explore two painted Buddhist caves from the Mogao Caves at Dunhuang (which were introduced at the end of the lecture this week on Buddhism). These have been digitized as virtual reality panoramas by the Dunhuang Academy and placed online, along with some description and high-quality detail photos of the walls. 1. Explore Cave no. 249, which in one of the earliest at the site and dates to the Western Wei period in China (ca. 535-556 CE).

Comment on the style of decoration of each cave. How are they different in terms of color palette and drawing style, especially those used for human figures?
Looking at cave 249, the images have different colours such as white, brown, blue and red, giving the cave a deeper color palette. The color difference in the images makes them have a contrasting message (Dunhuang Academy, 2012). Additionally, looking closely to the cave, there is a big picture of a Buddha and besides it there two Bodhisattvas. On the other hand, in cave 320, the palette seems to have a brighter color since its images are light green and blue. These colors contrast the darker colors in cave 249. In both caves, the Buddha is not only found on the central part but also others surrounding their walls and ceilings.
What type of scene occupies the ceiling of each individual cave?
