Developmental milestones are the markers that demonstrate a child's growth and achievements as they progress from infancy into childhood (Choo et al., 2019). The developmental features the nurse needs to evaluate for the nine-month-old female infant can be categorized into social/emotional, language/communication, and cognitive/physical dimensions. Regarding social/emotional milestones, the nurse should assess if the child is clingy, fearful, or shy around strangers. The child should also smile or laugh when the caregiver plays peek-a-boo. The child should also be able to make different sounds, such as "babababa" and "mamamama," and lift her arms to allow the caregiver to pick them up. The nurse should also evaluate the child's learning, problem-solving, and thinking, as demonstrated by the ability to bang things together and look for toys when dropped out of sight. The physical markers to assess include sitting independently, shifting items from one hand to another, and getting to a sitting position without support (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2022).
