Lesson Plan
Level: Fifth Grade
Subject: English
Learning Objectives: Learners will be able to identify prepositional phrases and prepositions.
Introduction
Explain to the learners that a preposition refers to a word that is used to begin prepositional phrases. Provide several examples of prepositions such as “before,” “across,” and “above.” Explain that a prepositional phrase is a series of words consisting of a preposition and its object. Give an example with the sentence, “The boy is sleeping on the bed,” and explain that the prepositional phrase is “on the bed.”
Explain to the learners that the lesson will involve finding prepositions and prepositional phrases in a reading excerpt.
Teacher Modeling
Distribute copies of the reading excerpt to the learners. Model the process of reading the text using a personal copy. Highlight the prepositions and draw arrows that link them to their objects. Explain the process to the students.
Interactive Modeling
Have learners review the passage and highlight the prepositions and prepositional phrases that they find. As they are working, highlight the prepositions and prepositional phrases on personal copy and once they are done, reveal the answers and have the students make corrections on their passages.
Independent Working Time
Have students review the written sample and answer the questions on the worksheet.
Assessment
Go round the classroom during independent working time to identify and provide assistance to struggling students. Ask students to share their answers from the questions on the worksheet as you reveal the right answer to each question.
