“These were paper strips to which you added a drop of blood, timed it for 1 minute, and washed it off. They developed a blue color, and you read that color by comparing it to a color chart. It gave you an approximation of the blood glucose level.” (Mendosa, 2006).
Currently, there is an accurate measurement of blood glucose levels, and the dose of the anti-glycemic agent that will be administrated will depend on the glucose levels. An example of this is the administration of insulin in hyperglycemic states. The high blood sugar dose is dependent on the actual blood sugar minus the target blood sugar, all over the correction factor (Diabetes Education Online, 2020). Without accurate measurement of the actual blood sugar, the dose of insulin that will be administrated will not be accurately computed, resulting in hypoglycemia, in case of an overdose, and hyperglycemia, in an inadequate dose. Hence, when there is no way to accurately measure blood glucose, the clinicians are depending their treatment based on a mark of high or low without proper quantification, which may result in the wrong administration of the drug.
