Objective: The objective of this assignment is for students to use a mapping tool to highlight patterns of poverty and wealth to address overconsumption and resource extraction. Using the information students will draw conclusion and explain the correlation between resource consumption and wealth.
Learning Outcomes:
Describe the role of various human activities that place stress upon the environment. Students will learn how the wealth of country (GNI) increases the countries contributions to environmental stresses through consumption patterns.
Demonstrate an understanding of the interrelationship between humans and the physical environment. Students will learn how energy consumption increases with a countries wealth.
Identify several major environmental problems and assess how this affects our ability to live in a sustainable way. Students will identify which countries place stresses on the environment and how the environmental problems of low income and high income countries are different. By identifying the environmental problems, students will be able to identify sustainable ways to live.
Describe viable solutions, based on scientific principles, to the major environmental problems facing contemporary society. Students be able to identify scientifically sound sustainable suggestions for regions of the world
Scientific Learning Outcomes:
Students describe the Scientific Method and apply the scientific principles they have learned to theoretical and practical issues. Students will use the scientific method to ask questions, draw hypotheses and make educated conclusions based on the factual data given on the maps.
Students interpret measurable and observable information through inference and analogy to develop hypotheses and draw conclusions. Students will hypothesize and draw conclusions based on the factual data given on the maps.
Students describe methods of scientific inquiry and use critical thinking skills to investigate, question, and solve problems. Students will use scientific inquiry and critical thinking skills to determine patterns of wealth and distribution globally and the consequences to the environment.
Students describe and carry out experimental procedures and/or perform laboratory tasks when appropriate to the field, interpret and communicate scientific information using written, oral and/or graphical means, analyze one or more relationships among science, technology, and society, and apply logical reasoning in explaining natural phenomena and experimental procedures or outcomes. Students will interpret scientific information using a written format to analyze the relationship between patterns of wealth, energy consumption and HDI.

5 Singapore, which is a high income country faces an overwhelming challenge of air pollution in the environment. Carbon dioxide emissions, mainly from industries and motor vehicles is detrimental to the country’s environment and health of its citizens and has led to nationwide efforts by the government to curb this problem. In addition, frequent land and forest fires in the country also reduce the quality of air, especially during the Southwest monsoon period. Singapore also grapples majorly with water pollution which is caused by industrial effluents and domestic wastewater. These emissions contain chemical toxins and organic products which undermines the quality of water in the country. In the late 20th Century, the Singapore River was heavily polluted and it took the government approximately 10 years to clean it, showing how bad the situation of water pollution really is. Since Singapore is a country with limited water resources, there is a need for the government and its citizens to work together to conserve their water quality.
6 Liberia, one of the lowest ranked income earning countries in the world is crippled by deforestation of its forests, poaching, and poor sanitation. The country has been identified as a biodiversity hotspot, which means that its forests are under threat from human habitation.
