In the article “Education for Youth under Formal Supervision of the Juvenile Justice System,” there is a review of the educational risk factors associated with juvenile and adult offending, recidivism, and contact with the justice system. The report further highlights a significant relationship between the dropout rates and crime among youths aged 16-18 (4). The juvenile corrections/detention article highlights that juvenile youths are less likely to benefit from education protective factors and their learning outcomes (1). Yet, one of the ways to combat juvenile delinquency is through education, but juveniles already in the criminal justice system are worse off and have higher school dropout rates than their peers.
One of the antecedents of juvenile behavior is poor educational achievement, where young people who commit crimes and are in the juvenile system are more likely to be out of school. Resolving school failure would likely help reduce juvenile delinquency rates, recidivism, and juvenile detention. Children who feel they have no place in society and come from dysfunctional backgrounds tend to exhibit anti-social behavior even while at schools they do not live as citizens or as subjects of law. Furthermore, failure to provide protection to young people who leave the juvenile centers places them at risk of reoffending and even being in the criminal justice system as adults.
Juvenile delinquency and poor academic performance are important topics in Juvenile Justice as there is a need to prevent and reduce juvenile delinquency rates.
