A state refers to a community of human beings who enjoy the monopoly of the legitimate use of physical force in a defined territory (Slide 2). It means that a state should have a well-outlined territory and a legal monopoly to use physical force. The power to tax constituents determines a state territory, which is also its geographic coverage. Charles Tilly claims that a state is a centralized and differentiated organization with control over the means of violence among the people living in the region (Slide 6).
