Merton views that the concept of the authentic self is essential. To Merton, this concept refers to understanding the purpose of life and what it is like to live well. Merton notes that at one point, he was engulfed in confusion and misery (“…rescue us from the confusion and misery we had come to find ourselves…”). The light of Christ illuminates the concept of the authentic self so that confusion and misery are replaced with clarity/ understanding. To me, the term authentic self means walking closely with God to know myself and my purpose. Since God is my maker, He surely knows why I am here on earth. Therefore, in the journey of self-discovery, God should take center stage.
