1 As companies internationalize, they have to decide the approach to take in performance management. There is a tension between standardization and localization with the firms from the West likely to use the former approach. This raises concerns about the applicability of the Western concept of performance management in other contexts due to the difference in factors such as culture and national laws. Although standardization enhances uniformity, global integration, and fairness, it may fail to reflect the situation in different contexts.
2 The international character of an MNE such as corporate culture determines design decisions such as the evaluation method, frequency of evaluation, and whether a localization or standardization approach will be used. As pointed out by Tarique, Briscoe, and Schuler (2016), an MNE with a strong corporate culture and centralized decision-making process is likely to design the performance management system using the standardization approach.
