As arguably one of the most elaborate analyses of counterculture, Thomas Frank does a magnificent job at highlighting how unconventional ideas and ideas considered transgressive in normal society have come to be embraced and leveraged by a host of stakeholders in the social realm. In this sense, the commodification of counterculture refers to the attachment of countercultural idea to commodities in the marketplace. In his thesis, Frank manages to demonstrate how counterculture has always vehemently opposed conformity to social norms and values. From poets such as Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg, Frank posits that counterculture was a rebellion against conformity and as such critical to the transformation of social norms (Maasik and Solomon 135-136). The aforementioned poets alongside other progenitors of the Beats culture managed to glorify rebellion from social convention and the pursuit of independent thought, action, and speech.
As a result of the development of counterculture and its significant appeal to modern generations, businesses have decided to leverage the popularity of counterculture to their advantage.
