Overview:
You are now ready to apply the theory you have learned in lessons 3-2, 3-3 and 3-4.
Scenario:
You are the President and owner of a consulting company that has been hired to prepare a report for BP on their handling of the oil spill disaster. BP plans to give your report to new managers so that will be better able to approach major decisions and challenges.
Your task is to create a report that explains the challenges faced by management during the BP oil spill crisis and suggest what theories/strategies should have been used for better results.
Instructions:
Please download and read the case study: "BP and the Deepwater Horizon Disaster of 2010".
Create a report that discusses all the management challenges that you were involved (perception, conflict, motivation challenges).
For each challenge, explain the situation, explain what alternative measures you would have taken as a manager (based on the theories involved in this section), and explain possible outcomes of your decisions/actions.
The report can be presented in any format that you like: formal business report, three paragraph essay, podcast, Google slide presentation, video, Prezi, etc.

Managers are required to play a pivotal role in an organization by creating a strong partnership with employees as a means of establishing and implementing motivation. Managers are, therefore, required to have a greater understanding of the relationship between motivation, performance, and rewards as a means of keeping employees motivated to perform their tasks as needed. Understanding various challenges that likely to affect an organization positions the management at a step ahead in checking possible challenges.
Employee motivation is greater than merely giving rewards to employees. More is required to ensure good leadership, high productivity of employees, employee safety and other essential elements that management ought to uphold. Some of these crucial elements include:
The safe and enabling work environment
The significance of the work environment cannot be overemphasized. The circumstances under which work activities take place on day to day basis is instrumental to the productivity and quality of output by the employees. Managers are required to provide a safe and conducive work environment that contributes positively influences their attitudes and motivation towards work. Bad management and poor decisions contributed to the terrible BP oil spill disaster. For example, the use of poor quality cement, a dead battery, and faulty wiring were attributed to poor management decisions that would eventually be detrimental to the safety employees (Associated Press). Elkind et al. describe the disaster management preparations as “an accident waiting to happen.” Creating a safe and enabling work environment motivates both the management and the employees raising their attitudes and enthusiasm to perform their tasks beyond expectation (Bessell et al., 2). While rewarding positive behaviors and high productivity improve motivation and passion, the impact of safe and enabling work environment needs to be upheld.
