The Louvre museum is one of the world's largest museums, housing awe-inspiring art collections. Located at Seine River in France, the museum was first constructed as a castle, and then later, it was converted to a royal residence. When Louis XIV moved the royal place to Versailles, the Louvre was turned to be an art museum. The Louvre houses Egyptian antiques, crown jewels, and Greek and Roman monuments, not forgetting French noble artifacts. Although the museum houses more than 35,000 works of art at any time, the Mona Lisa painting by Leonardo da Vinci is the most visited piece of art. The portrait is unique as it has a great visual impression and gives the audience incredible memories.
Mona Lisa is one of the most famous and visited portraits globally. Created in 1503 by Leonardo da Vinci, the portrait has been a center of discussion by artists, academicians, and the public for decades. Written during the Italian Renaissance period, art has strongly influenced the ideas of generations. The painting dimensions are 30 in.by 21 in. there are various formal elements and design principles that Da Vinci utilizes to create this magnificent piece (Fletcher, 694).
Formal Elements 
The tone of the portrait is a symbol of an ideal of happiness. On closer look, the middle distances of the paint on a level with the sitter's chest are painted in warm colors. This is cultivated space far-reaching with a zigzagging road and bridge. This landscape signifies the change between the space of the sitter and the far distances where the set becomes an unoccupied region of rocks and water that expand to the horizon, which the artist has smartly drawn at the level of the sitter's eye (Course textbook, 38). Expressive lines are more pronounced in the art clothing, face, and hair. The mouth of the art has a subtle curve. Being the center of attraction of views, it carries a meaning, which many people, especially scholars, want to know why Da Vinci used these subtle curves in this area.
Nonetheless, the zigzag lines in the arts sleeves indicate that the fabric used by the artists is either smooth or soft. Leonardo Da Vinci also employed geometric shapes such as oval space, part of the sculpture. Additionally, Da Vinci succeeded in incorporating sfumato in his art that overlays translucent layer of colors. The technique involves the use of blending colors, making transitions unclear. However, the painting appears to have no lines due to sfumato.
 The form is another formal element visible in the Mona Lisa painting. The artist applied this element to give the woman a realistic appearance as she is regarded as being 3-D. The women represent positive spaces while the background represents negative spaces. Overall, Da Vinci eloquently integrates formal elements to create a renowned artwork. Ideally, Leonardo Da Vinci's work is representational. This is because the arts truly represent the aspect of happiness. Additionally, the artist claimed that he created his art to represent happiness to society.
