Industrial Economics III: Market Structure and Competition Policy INDIVUDUAL COURSEWORK BRIEF Project Guidelines and Administration:  This is an individual coursework. Your coursework needs to be submitted electronically on moodle before 15:00 on Thursday, November 12, 2020. The coursework mark will account for 20% of the total mark of the module.  The maximum word limit is 1,000 words. The Chinese smartphone and mobile phone market have changed rapidly in the past 10 years, where Apple and Samsung were dominant, but now Chinese smartphone brands are the most popular. The defined market is the smartphone market in China, where millions of units are sold each year. Economic theory classifies markets according to their structure, and this depends mainly on the number of sellers and buyers, in addition to other factors. Market structures differ in the number and size of the producers and consumers in the market, the type of goods and services, trade, and access the information. They are also entry or exit barriers in perfect competition.
Smartphones and feature phones are common in China, but new models have mostly been smartphones, with the domestic manufacturers dominate the domestic market. Still, Apple and Samsung are among the top 10 smartphone brands in China. The data sets include sales in terms of smartphone sales volume in China. In 2018, there was a decline in the smartphones sold in China, but there were increased shipments of HUAWEI, HONOR, and Xiaomi. There are now different Android products available that are high quality and made by domestic companies in China.
President Trump’s banning of Huawei products in 2018, the US affected the company’s growth. In 2018 Huawei (including Honor) shipped a total of 119.17 million units in the Chinese smartphone market, but Honor is a sub-brand of Huawei. According to the 2018 Sino Market Research as reported by Artashyan (2019), when considered separately, Huawei sold 64.9 million units, and Honor sold 54.27 million units tied for third and fourth, respectively. HUAWEI, OPPO, Vivo, HONOR, and Xiaomi are the major domestic smartphone players in China. At the same time, Meizu, Gionee, and OnePlus are also competitive in some markets, with OnePlus increasingly competitive in the worldwide premium smartphone market.
The US-China trade dispute is likely to affect the smartphone, telecommunication and consumer electronic market even after the defeat of President Trump. Huawei has increased its market share in China even as sales have slowed down in the international market as a result of Trump banning the company’s products in the US. At the same time, Chinese smartphone shipment share by foreign companies has continued to decline as Chinese manufacturers have scaled up operations and are both price competitive and offer high-quality precuts. Chinese brands will have increased the market share overseas, even as Chinese brands mainly focus on the home market that still has huge growth potential.
