Conformity refers to when everyone lives the same lifestyle or living a socially expected way. The 1950s was a decade of affluence and prosperity for many Americans. Although, some individuals rebelled against the status quo since it detached and isolated the people who were less fortunate. It is essential to note that intellectuals, politicians, and artists protested against the inequalities that plagued America during the decade. The minority seemed to be shut out from the emerging American dream. This paper explains how conformity encouraged Americans to embrace democracy and why factors such as racism and segregation and poverty made Americans rebel against conformity.
Conformity was essential in American in1950s, this is because it enabled the American people to embrace patriotism and democracy. Conformity motivated the people to support the American government and its role in different parts of the world and when the antiwar riots attracted significant media attention, many individuals still regarded the government actions as just.
