The word “foodscape” is somewhat a combination of two words which comes from the root word food and landscape. In the article Foodscape, which was written by Norah Mackendrick, foodscape is consists of many things which vary from one personal point of reference. When an individual acknowledge and consider what kind of food that the store offers, he or she is already taking a peak or, perhaps, formulating his foodscape.
Foodscape pertains to the food environment of a specific individual. This encompasses a field of geography that refers to the environment concerning food. In sociology, this term is involved with arrangements, discourses, and cultural spaces that intervene in one’s interest with food. In one’s point of locality, the food stores available around the neighbourhood affect the health and, somehow, define the financial stability of an individual. This foodscape helps the inhabitant of a particular place recognize and do planning regarding food stocks for oneself or the whole family. In the article provided, it was stated that these days’ food businesses are being driven by the top priority in business which is to gain profit. Some places are not being provided with fresh and affordable food products because of its distance, and for some unacceptable reason for prejudices and racism; this becomes a reason why other people are not being fortunate and provided enough with excellent and healthy food. In other instances, distance is also a hindrance in getting adequate food because most people drive the extra mile to purchase from big stores like malls and supermarkets. In this case, this becomes a hassle and inconvenient to people who are running with their clock in daily living. It is useful when there is enough time to spare for buying groceries in supermarkets; on the contrary, people who do not have personal vehicles may find it inconvenient and costly. The foodscapes of these people are greatly affected and messed up just like how people who have low income; children are likely to be affected, too.
