The discussion in Lesson 3 provides you an opportunity to examine the views of others with different perspectives on leadership.

Before next week's discussion, you must:

  • Prepare three questions to ask an interviewee on effective leadership (e.g., "What will make you a more effective commander/leader?"  Be prepared to provide your interviewee your rationale for your questions.
  • Conduct a one-on-one interview with a leader on a different leadership "track" than you (i.e., officers should interview an enlisted leader, civilians should interview an officer or contractor, etc.)

During next week's discussion, be prepared to summarize your interviewee's responses to your three questions AND answer the following reflective question (in 200-600 words):

There is an adage of old that says man is not an island. This essentially means that humans are social beings, and the need to interact with others is indispensable. In the course of interacting with others, people exchange vital information. In this regard, I interviewed an army officer to get more insights into how one can become an effective leader.
What I Learned
I started the interview by stating how I have always admired the way the army appears organized. As such, the first question I posed to the officer revolved around how the army manages to run its affairs in a seamless and organized manner. The officer intimated that effective planning is one of the most effective elements in military leadership. The fundamental task of planning is formulating strategies to actualize what seems impossible. Army leaders improvise backup plans and rehearsals to prepare for unforeseen challenges. The backup plans include having reserve officers on standby (Novogradac, 2014). In addition, the officer intimated that the army has a consistent structure with well-defined expectations (Secretary of the Air Force, 2009). This improves the competence of army officers.
Further, I needed to know how army officers interact with each other in the line of duty. In essence, I wanted to understand whether they encounter any interpersonal relationship challenges. If that is the case, how do they cope with them? The officer intimated that the army subscribes to the principle of "mission first, people always." In this regard, army leaders understand that the success of any mission depends on army officers.
