The population of Black people living in Baltimore, Maryland changed significantly between 1970 and 2010 following the industrialization of the city in the 1970s. A comparison of the 1970 and 2010 black settlements shows that African Americans were clustered in one area in Baltimore in 1970 and were distributed in various places by 2010. Most black people lived in a densely populated community and were mostly clustered in one area surrounded by Rosedale, Woodlawn, Luncheon, Catonsville, and Arbutus. Other areas including further East, West and North of Baltimore had not been inhabited by any black population. By 2010, Baltimore had an almost even distribution of black people in various Census Tracts including places that were not previously inhabited by African American population.
The population of black people living in Baltimore in 2010 was generally lower compared to that of the 1970s. For example, Census Tract 1605 had 6.6 million black people in 1970 but the population had dropped to 4.7 million African Americans by 2010. During the 1970s some places in the city had a dense population of African Americans while other places were sparsely populated. Some places in Baltimore including Census Tracts 1601, 1602, 1604, 15006, 1304, 1307 and 1605 and other tracts had a higher percentage of African Americans but still maintained higher population density after the changes in the structure of black communities in Baltimore. For instance, in 1970Census Track 1506, 98.7% of the population was black while in 2010 it was 97.48%. The number of blacks in such tracts remained relatively high despite the slight drop in the percentage of African American population.
