Social movements Communities have used social movements to create economic, social, and political change at different levels and periods. In recent years, social movements have used new media technology to mobilize online and offline protests and connect with a larger audience to spread information and create change (Caren, Andrews and Lu, p.6). Social movements such as a Black Lives Matter (BLM) and #MeToo promote inclusion and awareness by focusing on injustices and creating change.
Social movements create awareness by focusing on injustices affecting different groups of people. They create awareness through protests and media coverage. According to Lu (p.2), social movements demand the attention of the media and obtain coverage in media outlets. Consequently, the media disseminates the information to the public, thus creating awareness about the injustices. For instance, the BLM movement made the media aware of police brutality against unarmed black people (Lu, p.34) and as a result, the media shared this information with the public and increased awareness of the injustice.
Increased awareness also contributes to changes in behavior and increases the validation of issues facing the minority group.
According to Levy and Mattsson (p.4), the #MeToo movement increased public awareness about sexual misconduct in the workplace and beyond and as a result, more people came out to report sexual-related crimes. The movement not only made people change their attitude toward reporting sexual-related crimes but also validated their experiences by making them aware that they are not the only ones with such experiences.
