Chapter Four: Multicultural Perspectives and Diversity Issues
The chapter discusses the beliefs, cultural values, and assumptions of helping professionals and their clients. The chapter also discusses how values and beliefs can impact therapeutic outcomes. Additionally, the chapter defines culture, ethnicity, diversity, oppressed groups, and multiculturalism. It concerns how to appropriately refer to specific ethnic and racial groups as the accepted names frequently change. For example, a practitioner will not be sure to use Hispanic, Latina or Chicana to refer to a Mexican American (Corey et al., 2014). A cultural tunnel vision makes an individual assume that all cultures are the same due to limited interaction with other diverse cultures.
Corey et al. (2014) claim that the matters around human diversity is not limited to ethnic and racial factors. It spreads to all forms of discrimination, oppression, and prejudice by including aspects like ability, gender, sexual orientation, and religious affiliations (2014). A therapist who works with bisexual, gay, lesbian, and transgender clients have the responsibility of understanding the unique concerns of such clients. The therapist is ethically obligated to develop skills and knowledge to deliver services to such clients effectively. Therefore, therapists must be appropriate, accurate, meaningful, and respectful to their colleagues and clients regardless of their ability, ethnicity, race, or sexual orientation. The therapists can undergo additional training to help them modify their techniques and rethink their theories to meet the unique needs of diverse clients.

The chapter stresses that clients' rights cannot be taken for granted. The chapter educates clients on their responsibilities and rights in the therapeutic process.
