Fisher-Price’s Violations of NSPE Code of Ethics

Book Review Instructions:

There is a check rate, and then write as clearly as possible. Thank you. The specific questions that need to be answered in the essay will be in the uploaded file later.

Preparation: (1) Read the following article, “Fisher-Price Invented a Popular Baby Sleeper Without Medical Safety Tests and Kept Selling It, Even as Babies Died.” (On the ____Libraries website, type the title of this article (without quotation marks) in the Search Summon box. This will call up the article.) (2) Review the professional Code of Ethics for the National Society for Professional Engineers, in our textbook, Engineering Ethics: Concepts and Cases, pp. 269-274. Topic: In your paper, identify specific “Rules of Practice” and “Professional Obligations” set out in the NSPE Code of Ethics (giving just the numerical designations, such as “Rule 1.a” or “Obligation 3.b”, rather than typing out the whole Rule or Professional Obligation) that, arguably, Fisher-Price engineers who developed the baby sleeper (including those on the Safety Committee) failed to fulfill in their work on the sleeper, explaining just how the engineers may have failed to fulfill these professional duties. (The point here is not to assign blame to individuals but to understand the variety of professional responsibilities engineers need to bear in mind as they develop products on which the public depends. Also, this assignment is not about what regulations the government should enact with regard to baby sleepers or whether or not Fisher-Price should have recalled the product. The focus of the assignment is exclusively the relevant professional responsibilities of the engineers who designed and built the baby sleeper.)

Fisher-Price’s Violations of NSPE Code of Ethics
Professional engineers must adhere to the National Society for Professional Engineers (NSPE) code of ethics. The engineers at Fisher-Price, a toy company, designed and manufactured an inclined baby sleeper named Rock ‘n Play (Frankel, 2019). In so doing, they failed to fulfill several obligations and rules of the NSPE Code of Ethics, especially those falling under Fundamental Canons 1 and 2. First, the engineers failed to fulfill Rule 2.a., which required them to operate within their areas of competence (Harris et al., 2019). Fisher-Price is a toy company in this case, which means that the engineers are qualified and skilled in toys. As a result, designing and manufacturing sleepers for children can be deemed as operating outside the field in which they have qualified education or experience. Toys and children’s sleepers have different technical requirements. For instance, children’s sleepers must abide by various technical aspects that affect the infant’s sleep. On the contrary, toys only need to meet various functional and safety requirements. Therefore, making sleepers violated Rule 2.a., since the engineers were not competent in this regard.
By designing the sleeper, the engineers approved the design documents. In so doing, they failed to fulfill Rule 1.b., which requires conformity with the applicable standards. Designing a baby sleeper should adhere to standards approved by pediatricians and other experts on infant sleep. However, Fisher-Price engineers ignored such standards and approved design documents based on their own faulty beliefs regarding baby sleep. A similar position can be held for Rule 1.e., which prohibits engineers from aiding or abetting unlawful practice (Harris et al., 2019). Since the first case of infant mortality associated with the company’s products, the engineers, especially those in the safety committee, became liable ...
