Investigational Drugs Ethics
The use of investigational drugs raises several ethical issues. According to Borysowski and Gorski (2020), ethical use of these drugs needs to meet such criteria as informed patient decision, independent review, justified need for use, no threat to the development of investigational drugs, patient benefit as the primary goal, and adequate scientific evidence to support the treatment. Additionally, there needs to be justice in using these drugs, which may include using better medications during the treatment period if they can be accessed (Dhupkar & Mukherjee, 2022). In many cases, the use of investigational drugs can be regarded as compassionate since many patients subjected to or requesting these medications cannot find alternatives within the approved drugs (Goyal et al., 2020). These ethical issues tend to dictate the practices surrounding using investigational drugs.
The ethical issues are essential to the study area of investigational drugs since they offer guidelines regarding the best practices. Additionally, the ethical problems challenge practitioners since investigational drugs have more uncertain outcomes. Legal regulations across such countries as the US, the European Union (EU), Australia, and Canada have been expanded to improve access to these drugs (Borysowski & Gorski, 2020). However, these legal allowances only give patients the right to try the medicines. Investigational drugs are often those with ongoing clinical or lab trials. As a result, practitioners using them could be regarded as interested more in scientific discoveries than in successful treatment. Therefore, such ethical issues as adequate scientific evidence imply that the practitioners have scientific proof that the treatment works. Without these criteria, the use of investigational drugs will be considered unethical. Additionally, ethical issues are important since they can have critical legal implications for the practitioners.
