Why Did You Choose the Group You Did?
The homeless in Florida represent one of the vulnerable groups that require sustained support to become self-sufficient. Choosing the homeless as one of the disenfranchised groups to explore in this activity was inspired by the many individuals I meet on the streets genuinely asking for assistance. Despite Florida being one of the drastically growing regions with diverse projects that seeks to elevate people’s socioeconomic status, it remains perplexing that a significant proportion of its residents struggle with basic needs issues in the streets (LaGrone, 2022). Considering that these individuals are also literate and capable of becoming productive but lack the opportunity, this group is an important one that the government and other stakeholders can combine efforts to address their plight.
What Makes This Group So Vulnerable?
Homelessness is a concerning social problem that makes the victims live in vulnerable situations. Florida Housing Coalition (2017) report indicates that one of the reasons that this group remains at risk is that individuals have significantly low incomes that cannot allow them to afford the existing housing in the region. As a result, these individuals are left grappling with places to live, and their severity varies depending on one’s income. Another major issue that increases their risks is that some persons in this category suffer from other associated health complications, including mental health issues. Trends further indicate that the homeless have elevated chances of becoming entangled in substance abuse and other negative practices that increase their vulnerability.

Saint Petersburg, Florida, has diverse shelters and related services that ensure these individuals live as comfortably as possible. Some amenities include the day shelters, halfway housing, emergency homeless shelters, and permanent affordable housing.
