Is the Digital Divide Widening or Shrinking?
The digital divide refers to the gap between members of a society or community who have access to computers and the internet and know how to use them and those who have no access to the above mentioned, or those who have access but do not know how to use them.
The digital divide continues widening at a startling pace. Several factors are leading to the digital divide. Examples include; education and income (Ohiagu, 2013). Education broadens the digital range in that highly educated people are most likely to use computers and the internet at home and in their workplace than those with lower educational levels (Dolan, 2016). Income plays a role in the widening of the digital divide. For example, a household with a high income can easily afford internet services at home, whereas those with low-income can't (NTIA Falling through the Net 99). Education and income cause the widening of the digital gap.
There are several reasons why we need to close the digital gap. A few are economic growth and fairness. Economic growth comes about when everyone in a community (even the poor) has equal opportunities to improve the economy (Dolan, 2016).
