The “Body Ritual among the Nacirema” by Horace Miner is one of the most outstanding articles I have ever read. Despite this article having some weird instances, it continued to increase my curiosity about the community. This article depicted the American culture to be highly spiritual. For example, it was interesting to note how this community was devoted to rituals and ceremonies since every house had at least a shrine (Miner, 1956). Furthermore, this group embraced spiritualism since they kept charms and magical potions. They also had medicine men and herbalists who they believed had the power to treat them. Furthermore, despite most of these rituals causing pain, they did not seem to give up due to their faith in this ritual. These rituals were painful since the children who had not yet been fully indoctrinated refused to go to the temple because they viewed it as a place where people would die.
Coming from the Hopi Indians, our culture had some rituals that could seem different. Most of our rituals formed a seamless and integral part of their well-being. These rituals aimed to give the community power to overcome life difficulties, usually performed during important milestones such as death. For instance, our community usually celebrated death since they viewed it as transitioning from life on Earth to new life in the Spirit World. This was the main reason our community washed the deceased using natural curds. After the washing, we usually dress those using traditional clothes. We also tied prayer feathers around the deceased's forehead. Since we believe there is life after death, we buried the deceased with feathered prayer sticks and their favorite possessions. We also served traditional foods and special herbs and placed them at the graveside. We also use many herbs and plants such as Bear Berry, Sage, Sweetgrass, Red Cedar, and Tobacco in spiritual connections to create a strong connection with the spirits and the afterlife.
